Over the past few months we have been working closely with student photographer Jennifer Murray on capturing The Old Library at it’s best as part of one of her modules.

A big thank you to our Family History Research Group and Rejuvenate Wellbeing CIC yoga class for letting Jennifer capture you in action!

Jennifer said “I loved working in The Old library these past few months because it has been able to help me understand the history of the library and the importance that it has to the community to the people who have been able to make the building a great safe space for people to work, do lessons and have a chat. It is a brilliant place that is bursting with history and is able to thrive in the modern age through the ways of social media. It has been a pleasure working here and I will cherish my time there.”

Heritage Open Day – September 2023

Lister Steps at The Old Library is taking part in Heritage Open Days latest project – New Wave, which helps to engage young people in heritage projects such as ourselves. This year a group of young people have been working together to design and deliver this year’s Heritage Open Day which will take place on the 15th September. The event will be called Liverpool Lives and will focus on how heritage is created by the people, not just the place. As part of the event, we are looking for people to share their stories about The Old Library and Old Swan and have their photo displayed on the evening with their story. These photographs and stories may also be used for Heritage Open Days in the future.

Date: 15th September

Time: Doors Open: 7pm, Start: 7.30pm

From small beginnings, with local parents setting up a place for kids after school and Nursey provision, Lister Steps has grown to become a vibrant Community Hub, in an award winning beautifully restored Carnegie Library Building in Old Swan/Tuebrook. We have begun to achieve our mission: ‘to be the spark that makes Tuebrook a better place to live and work’.

We are looking for enthusiastic local people who love The Old Library and wish to give something back to the community they care about as volunteers in a number of roles. Roles available at the moment include:

Café volunteers
Litter pickers
Befrienders
Event support
Book organisers

Lister Steps X New Wave Project

We are coming close to closing applications for the New Wave project that allows people 18-25 to get involved and run a project with Lister Steps at The Old Library.

The project is being run by Heritage Open Days across England to engage young people with more heritage sites. Young people who get involved must be aged 18-25 and the final product will be designed and delivered by themselves with support from our team.

Some examples of previous events that have run in the project: heritage QR treasure hunts, clothes swaps, botanical cocktail making, and more! So it really is open to interpretation and whatever the group would like to do. There will also be opportunity to gain experience in a particular area you might be interested in such as photography, marketing, social media, etc. Therefore it is a great way for people to get experience whilst also developing their skills and it looks great on a CV!

Solidarity Disco Banquet with Squash Liverpool

On Saturday 7th May, we had the absolute pleasure to host a Solidarity Disco Banquet with Squash Liverpool CIC.

The Solidarity Disco Banquet events are super-friendly and fun gatherings, full of music, singing, cooking, disco-dancing and eating, taking place in the week leading up to Eurovision at venues across Liverpool, standing in solidarity with Ukrainian people. DJ LadySpice was on hand filling the room with great music and everyone was getting involved with a boogie whilst making some delicious tradition meals from both Liverpool and Ukraine.

It was really great to see our community come together in solidarity with Ukraine whilst learning about solidarity and other cultures.

This May, don’t miss our exciting weekly events at our venue, perfect for friends and family!

Join us on May 12th for Bingo Night, where you can compete for fantastic prizes and enjoy an evening filled with laughter. Doors open at 6:30PM, and the fun begins at 7:15PM.

Test your knowledge at our Quiz Night on May 19th. Arrive by 6:30PM to secure your seat, and get ready for some challenging trivia starting at 7:00PM.

Finally, on May 26th, groove to the smooth tunes of our in-house jazz band “The Archives” during their live performance at 7:45PM. Arrive early to snag the best seats as doors open at 6:45PM.

Join the Board of Trustees at The Old Library

Would you or somebody you know be interested in joining our Board of Trustees at Lister Steps?

Lister Steps was set up in 1997 by parents for parents to address the need for community services and affordable childcare in Tuebrook. We take pride in our 24 year history of supporting families and providing quality services.

Since 2012 Lister Steps campaigned to save the Beautiful Grade 11 listed Carnegie Library owned by the Liverpool City Council. In 2016 we secured an award from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for the full restoration of the Library and to support a programme of activities designed to generate community cohesion, develop skills, encourage entrepreneurship, educate and bring enjoyment to the people of Tuebrook, and of course to become a new home for Lister Steps. The full restoration was completed in October 2020. We regard this as a fantastic achievement.

The relocation of Lister steps to the Old Library will now enable us to achieve our long term vision:

‘To be the spark that makes our area a better place to live and work.’

We would like to recruit trustees who:

Want to be part of the evolving and further development of the charity, ensuring that it continues to meet the needs of the people who use our services in a positive and innovative way.
Perhaps have a personal connection with the area
Are parents/carers of children attending our childcare services.
Have the time and commitment to actively work together with the Members of the Board to drive the charity forwards. The Board meets once a month and is responsible for setting the strategy and policies of Lister Steps, and guides and supports the CEO and her staff.
Can bring experience, specialist skills and/or a relevant network.
We are particularly interested to recruit people who have one or more of the following skills:

Finance Management – we are looking to appoint a new Treasurer.

Income generation/fundraising

PR, Marketing or event management.

Human Resources and law

Social Enterprise/Project management

Volunteer in The Old Library cafe

We’re looking for volunteers to help us keep everybody fed and watered in The Old Library café as we finally open up to the public!

You’ll provide a friendly welcome for visitors to The Old Library, as well as helping kitchen staff to serve food and drink to customers and ensuring the cafe remains clean and tidy. This is a great role if you enjoy meeting new people and are looking to gain experience in the hospitality industry. You’ll also get a delicious free meal & drink after every shift, plus 10% discount in the café!

Shifts are 10am – 2pm each weekday and we offer flexibility for you to fit volunteering in around other commitments by signing up for a minimum of just two shifts per month. An induction & training will be provided.

Join our friendly team and enjoy working in a beautiful heritage building whilst gaining new skills and helping Lister Steps make a difference in our local community.

Training & learning opportunities

We’re working with Liverpool Adult Learning Service to offer online learning courses in April. Feedback from our community suggested that people were most interested in learning new languages and having a go at creative writing so we will be offering the following:

Spanish for Beginners: Wednesday from 10am – 12pm or 1pm – 3pm

Learn the basics to help you get started with speaking a new language. You will learn how to talk about personal information like family members and professions, how to tell the time, how to follow directions to a wide range of locations, book public transport and order food in a restaurant.

French for Beginners: TBC, weekday from 6.30pm – 8.30pm

Creative Writing: TBC, weekday from 5.30pm -7.30pm

You will learn all aspects of the creative process such as dynamics, characters, settings and structures and learn how to create a variety of pieces such as stories, poems, plays and travel articles. This course is ideal for a beginner or whose who wish to write for pleasure.

Courses are free for anyone earning less than £18,600 or receiving any of the following support *Job Seekers Allowance, *Employment Support Allowance (Work Related Activity Group Only) *Universal Credit, Income Support, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit, Working Tax Credit, ESA (Support Group)

Craft & Cuppa Club going strong throughout lockdown

Our Craft & Cuppa Club was just getting started in 2020, with more members turning up to try out knitting, crochet and other needle-based crafts. Some people had been at it for years and brought along projects they were working on, whereas some beginners like Olivia, our Community Engagement Manager, learnt new skills from the more experienced members & volunteers who were happy to share their tips and advice.

When lockdown came in, we unfortunately had to stop meeting our new friends in person but that didn’t stop members Margaret & Freda…they’ve been very busy over these last few months making all sorts of woolly creations and we’ve kept in touch to share what we’ve been working on which has been a great source of support & entertainment this year.

We’re looking forward to getting back to our face to face group (Mondays 10am – 12pm) as soon as we can but in the meantime, take a look at some of their amazing creations!

Heritage Open Days 2020

Normally, at this time of year we’d be joining in with the Heritage Open Days Festival, celebrating the wonderful history of The Old Library and our local area.

For Heritage Open Days back in 2018, we welcomed visitors inside the grounds for the first time since the library closed and shared our new designs for the building, gathering feedback on all the events & activities that our community would like to enjoy when The Old Library re-opens.

Fast forward to 2019 when construction work had started on site and we spent a whole weekend showing people some of the amazing heritage features of the building as it was stripped back to its bare bones – a rare chance to see real heritage restoration in progress.

This year, we had planned to be open and finally able to celebrate without the hard-hats and high vis jackets! But with all the challenges 2020 has thrown our way, we have to wait a little longer before we can welcome our community back inside the building.

Instead, we put together this little film which shows you some sneak peeks of The Old Library as we near completion and you can hear from some of our staff, local volunteers & contractors who have supported the project over the last 18 months.
